Sumin was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. After obtaining his B.S. degree at Korea University, Sumin joined Prof. Jong-Seung Kim's laboratory at the same university for his M.S. degree research. After finishing the M.S. program, he joined SK Chemicals R&D Center in 2012. There, he conducted polymer research to develop amorphous polyester from bio-renewable monomers and high-performance engineering plastic. After working as an industrial researcher for about 5 years, he decided to pursue academia again and joined the Rovis group at Columbia University for his Ph.D. study. During his time in the Rovis group, Sumin developed Rh(III)-catalyzed alkene difunctionalization methods for the synthesis of various nitrogen-containing molecules. In 2021, Sumin joined the Knowles lab at Princeton University for his postdoctoral research. There, he developed the asymmetric & contra-thermodynamic olefin isomerization chemistry using photoredox and Cr dual catalysis. Sumin started his independent career at Konkuk University as an assistant professor in September 2023.
